What is:
Western Medical Acupuncture?
Acupuncture involves the use of fine needles inserted through the skin and left in position briefly to stimulate the nerves in the skin, muscle, and other tissues. It increases the release of the body’s natural painkillers in the pathways of the spinal cord and brain, thus modifying the way pain signals are received. Sometimes manual or low voltage electrical stimulation is used to assist this process.

Acupuncture does not only reduce pain, it can also have a beneficial effect on your health and well-being; for instance, the nervous system, muscle tone, hormone production, circulation and allergic responses as well as respiratory, digestive, urinary and reproductive systems.

The practice of Acupuncture dates back to antiquity and is likely to have been independently discovered in more than one place. It is an integral part of the practice of Traditional Chinese Medicine. Western Medical Acupuncture adapts the TCM approach, informed by knowledge of anatomy, neurophysiology and evidence based medicine. It is generally carried out by practitioners originally trained in conventional western medicine and allied professions.

Dr. Rachael Ross
As a conventional medical practitioner with more than 30 years’ experience, I have become aware of the problems involved in treating pain solely using the means considered conventional in the west. Pain is a single term, but covers a variety of sensations and our reactions to them, physically, psychologically and emotionally. I have a longstanding interest in the management of pain using physical treatments and in recent years, I have sought to extend my conventional training and think more holistically.
I therefore undertook the Foundation Course in Western Medical Acupuncture through the British Medical Acupuncture Society, gaining certification in 2017. I have extended my training specifically concentrating on arthritis and acupuncture in cancer-care, but treat a wide range of painful conditions, from headache to period pain.
I see many people suffering from cancer in my work and have found Acupuncture to be useful in improving general wellbeing and helping with specific symptoms. There are times during conventional cancer treatment when it is not advisable to have acupuncture, but outside these specific times, the therapy can help with nausea, loss of appetite and various forms of pain and altered sensation.
I practice as a Therapist in Gosport and Stubbington and continue to work conventionally in the NHS and privately. I live locally with my husband and 2 sons and enjoy gardening, archaeology and hands-on activities from knitting to woodwork.
